Overview:
The image of two serpents intertwined is a venerable one, with deep roots in the Ancient Near East, particularly Mesopotamia. The word mushussu literally means furious serpents, and like other protective amulets is a fearsome symbol designed to ward off evil. These twin snakes would stand guard at temple doors, and were thought to be the companions of the storm-God Tishpak. Here they cradle a sacred emerald, the gem of clarity and inner truth.
