Arriving week starting 23 Nov 2020!
Overview:
This adorable, hand-made brass candle stand made by NOUSAKU is inspired by the shape of canola flower (nanohana in Japanese). Small in size, it makes for a very elegant piece of art that will beautifully light up your room or dinner table.
To create a stand that would work with both warosoku Japanese candles, and Western candles, and provide great design and proper balance, NOUSAKU collaborated with traditional candle craftsmen from Ishikawa Prefecture.
Whilst the stand can be used with any candles, it was designed to be used with Canola Flower oil candles, crafted by another small Japanese business -Takazawa. Takazawa Candle started their business back in 1892 in Noto Nanao city, Japan. They create traditional Japanese candles made from natural wax, called warousoku. Takazawa candles will be coming to The Orangerie soon.
Warousoku have 2 main characteristics. One is that they use plant-based raw materials, and the other lies in the special way the wick is made. The candles use a wax that is derived from plant-based raw materials, such as haze seeds, canola flower, and coconut oil. The company has kept the traditional way of candle-making for over a century, and its candles are still being used in Buddist temples and homes as offerings; as well as at meditation and yoga sessions to calm the body and mind
Warousoku became popular with the spread of Buddhism, and in light of this historical background, one common use of these candles is as a tool for offering up prayer in places of worship. Examples of where they are used include temples, BUTSUDAN (Buddhist altars) in homes, and grave sites.
They have also come to be used as a way of making time for ourselves in the midst of busy, modern life. Candles can be lit as a way to make time for meditation or yoga, both of which restore calm to the body and mind, to ease tension after returning home from work, or to promote enjoyable conversation with family at dinner time. Their use as a way to make quality time that lasts until the flame extinguishes itself.
To accentuate the beauty of the material, Nousaku make each object one at a time on a turning wheel. A simple, elegant design….the piece expresses a perfect harmony of modern design and traditional technique.
Materials: Brass
Dimensions: TBA Height – 28mm x Diameter – 37mm, weight 45g.
Caring for your brass object: Do not rub with a metal polisher. The brass has been coated with a clear fixing finish (urethane), however, the colour may slightly fade over time – and this is a natural process for brass. Wipe with a soft cloth or a sponge after use. You can wash with diluted, gentle dishwashing detergent and lightly rub with a damp sponge/ cloth if needed. The slip is made of Japanese paper which is water resistant, but not waterproof. We recommend that you place the wind chime/bell indoors when the wind blows strongly.
